I am a letter carver who works mainly in stone and occasionally in wood to create a variety of hand-carved items such as bird baths, benches, standing stones, memorial stones, plaques and stones for interior use such a candle-holders, paperweights and stones with quotations.
My understanding of letter forms comes from my training as a calligrapher and from studying ancient manuscripts and inscriptions. Using this knowledge, I create contemporary lettering which is drawn and carved by hand using tools that have changed little in thousands of years.
I work to commission as well as creating my own pieces, always gaining my inspiration from the words, which is always my starting point.
Currently I am working on two large public art commissions, a 2.1 metre tall wooden obelisk in Bishop’s Stortford and the inscription for the base of a 7ft tall statue of Ebenezer Howard, which will be sited in Welwyn Garden City to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the town.
